Ms. Opal set out on her mission to make Juneteenth a national holiday.

2016 Route:
Ms. Opal planned a 1,400 mile route from Fort Worth, TX to Washington, DC.
2021 Route:
Ms. Opal embarked on a 2.5 mile route from Fort Worth, TX to Washington, DC. to recognize the 2.5 years it took for the news of freedom to reach all enslaved people in the United States. Opal’s walk this year was very successful and had other people walking with Ms. Opal.

Ms. Opal’s Letter to Obama
In June of 2016, Ms. Opal wrote a letter to President Barack Obama asking for his support in making Juneteenth a national holiday. She penned him before she set out on her walk to DC.
